In a first case, doctors in Bangladesh have successfully separated a pair of conjoined twins in a groundbreaking surgery.
Tohra and Tofu, ten-month-old twins from a remote village in Gaibandha were born fused at the spine and rectum to a farmer couple.
They were successfully separated in a nine-hour-long complex procedure by two dozen doctors at Dhaka Medical College, the largest hospital in the country.
Paediatric surgeon Abdul Hanif said the twins were in a stable condition but would require two more operations to restructure their internal organs.
“It is the first time in our medical history that we have successfully separated conjoined twins in Bangladesh. It was an extremely complex operation,” said Dr Hanif.
